Key findings for the administrative regions

This section includes some of the results from the UK Climate Projections (UKCP09); information about the sort of climate that we might expect over the coming century. The results shown here illustrate the sort of information that is provided by the UK Climate Projections. If you plan to use UKCP09, you should consult the technical site, where extensive user guidance is provided.

The key findings from UKCP09 suggest how our climate might change.

  • All areas of the UK get warmer, and the warming is greater in summer than in winter.
  • There is little change in the amount of precipitation (rain, hail, snow etc) that falls annually, but it is likely that more of it will fall in the winter, with drier summers, for much of the UK.
  • Sea levels rise, and are greater in the south of the UK than the north.

UKCP09 gives information about the changing climate (for example, rain) but not the effects the climate has (for example, where it might flood). All sorts of people will use UKCP09 information to feed into assessments of what the impacts of a changing climate might be for, for example, rail networks, habitats, health services or coastal defences.

You can read more detailed key findings for different parts of the UK, or look at UKCP09 maps of the UK showing the how the climate could change in future, and how this information should be interpreted.
